Here are three main route options from Guatemala City to San Lucas Tolimán, Lake Atitlán
1. Via Furthest South (Highland Route)
This route takes you south from Guatemala City on CA-9 (Interamerican Highway) toward Amatitlán. Then, you head southeast via the mountain roads through the highlands, passing by Chimaltenango. Continue south and then west towards San Lucas Tolimán, enjoying scenic mountain views and the local highland villages.
2. Via Avenida La Reforma and Pacaya Volcano
Start from Guatemala City on the CA-9 and take the route toward Escuintla. Before reaching the coast, turn inland to climb through the highlands, passing by the active Pacaya Volcano. From there, continue northwest on mountain roads until you reach San Lucas Tolimán. This route offers a mix of highland scenery and volcanic views.
3. The Coastal Route
To drive from Guatemala City to San Lucas Tolimán via Escuintla, start by heading south on the CA-9 highway toward Escuintla. From there, continue west on the CA-2 highway until you reach the junction to Cocales. Follow the road through Cocales, then continue toward Patulul. From Patulul, take the RN-11 route up into the highlands toward San Lucas Tolimán. The journey takes about 2.5 hours, passing from city traffic through coastal plains and then into winding mountain roads with scenic views to Lake Atitlán.
